My cake

We’ve discussed Kate’s cake. Now let’s talk about my cake!

Yes, I have a wedding cake in my future. Not in my super-immediate future, mind you. Due to various issues – one family wedding already scheduled for this summer, wanting to get married in Canada, and starting a midwifery degree with short, fixed holiday dates – my and Edward’s wedding won’t be until August next year. I guess that just gives me lots of time to think about details. Like cake.

Being a girl who loves to bake cakes, it may surprise you that wedding cakes don’t excite me much. They don’t always taste that great (I can’t actually remember the taste of a single wedding cake I’ve ever eaten, though I'm sure some of them must have been nice) and I’ve never missed it when I’ve been to a wedding without a traditional cake, or indeed, no cake at all. But weddings do funny things to people, don’t they? Now I think I’d quite like to have something to cut.

My taste is small, simple, pared down and plain. I’ve long gravitated to Martha Stewart for the ultimate in this aesthetic. I favour just two tiers, like one of these:

My mum is absolutely charmed by these personalized wedding cake toppers, and I must admit they’re very sweet. I also like fresh flowers on a cake, and I've long admired the adorable bell topper pictured below.

And even though I don’t like cheese, I am obsessed with the fabulous cheese cakes you can order these days. Since Edward is a total cheese fiend, wouldn’t this be a great savoury 'groom’s cake' to accompany a traditional wedding cake?

I know what you’re really wondering, though. Is she going to make her cake herself? Um, I doubt it! I’ve been to weddings with homemade cakes and there is something wonderful about them. My mum says that the best fruitcake my grandmother ever made was the one for my parents’ wedding (she then had it professionally decorated, a very sensible halfway house approach if you ask me.) Gluten Free Girl may be able to whip up her chocolate cake at 10:30pm on the eve of her wedding, but something tells me there will be enough stress without the added pressure of a kitchen meltdown.

And now, a ring shot. Just because!

What a wonderful decision to have to make :D. I know what ever you choose it is going to be simply fabulous, but i even though I know you are capable of it, I think its wise that you don't make your own. It will just put too much stress on you.
Cant wait to see what you end up going for.

Oh my, your engagement ring is just beautiful! Wow!

We got married last year - like you I wasn't fussed for wedding cake, I don't particularly like the posed photos either.

I've also never had a wedding cake I enjoyed... But at the end of the day I thought - it's me! I love cake! It's going to be strange if I don't have cake at my own wedding.

I ended up making my own cupcakes and not having a photo. They didn't taste very nice unfortunately! But for me - I wanted to have a beautiful expensive intricate wedding cake and if I couldn't have that it didn't matter what I had.

Enjoy the wedding fever!

Congratulations! How fun! :) I love making and decorating cakes but for my own wedding we made pies (well my mom and mother-in-law did). My mom even put some pumpkin pies on a three tiered stand and decorated them with flowers. It was fun. :) I'm sure whatever you decide it will look absolutely stunning.

Ha ha I found a cheese shop doing cheese wedding cakes the other day! I had to take a picture and send it to my fiance as he would love it. I also used it as a possible bribe to let me start planning our wedding - he's still not having it! But I am scouting venues still and have found my dress. May just book it and tell him to turn up lol.

Best of luck with your planning!

I used to work at a hotel that had a lot of weddings, and we got few really nice cakes. Honestly, the marks and sparks ones were some of the best (between texture, cutting quality, taste, and appearance.) The worst ones were definately the fruitcakes that so-and-so's aunt had cooked up and definately not put enough brandy into, or that they must have screwed up in some other way because it just crumbled into a heap as soon as you tried to slice into it!!

I like the idea of a traditional wedding cake, but I also think there's something really charming about using cupcakes that the bride and groom made themselves! (that was one of my favs!!)

It must be so much fun getting to research all these amazing cakes!

We went to a wedding last weekend where the 'cheese cake' tower (all delicious Welsh cheeses too, as a nod to the Bride's background) was brought out during the evening for everyone to taste inbetween all the dancing! It also came with beautiful platters of fresh food- fantastic!

As Dom said, please do keep us posted- and enjoy the sampling!

I wish I was getting married just to devour one of those towers of cheese!! Such a good idea.

Congratulations! Gorgeous ring! I'd offer to make your cake but I'll likely be on the wrong side of the ocean!

Did I miss it? Was there an official announcement? Is that the official ring? Lots to say here. First, the ring is gorge-us. Oh my. I have a ruby for my engagement ring so I am a big fan of colored stones. Second, August is a great month for weddings - our anniversary is Aug. 24th - 9 years this summer! Finally, I did make my own wedding cake but I did it for a party that we had the week after our wedding, so a little less pressure. I was a much less experienced baker and was living in a house with a tiny kitchen and an oven that barely worked, and I did fine. People still talk about my cake. Not because it was beautiful (because it was far from beautiful - crooked tiers, not frosted all that well), but because it was delicious and very summery. Let me know if you want the recipe!

Thanks all for the comments!

I think you've all convinced me a) to get a cheese cake and b) not to make my own cake!

Dani, I totally wish you could make my cake! Might be a tad impractical...

Dana, you didn't miss anything ;) That is the ring - it's a purple Ceylon sapphire. I love it but it was a tough choice between that and a regular blue sapphire (yes I chose it). Go colored stones! Aren't they the best??

Exciting! I LOVE your ring, such a beautiful colour. Congratulations!

Those cheese stacked cakes are quite interesting but I don't think I'd pick one of those instead of a sweet cake. Maybe as well as...!

I could spend hours on the Martha Stewart site... so many gorgeous cakes, I see your quandary!

A cheese cake? What a fantastic idea for a groom's cake! It isn't something you see every day, and it will definitely be a huge delight to your guests.

"My taste is small, simple, pared down and plain." - bit like your taste in men then...... hahaha

I have never heard of a cheese cake but I really wish I had. My husband would have been in heaven!

My grandmother made the layers and I had them professionally iced and decorated. The cake icing was the only part of our wedding we hired someone to do and it was well worth it. I hope you have fun planning and dreaming. :)
