The dress was absolutely gorgeous, wasn't it? But what did you think of the cake?
As I mentioned back in November, I'm no lover of over-the-top royal wedding cakes. But this one wasn't terrible as these things go. In fact, it was kind of alright. I was already familiar with Fiona Cairns, who was chosen to make the cake - her business is just 20 miles from here and I often see her delivery vans driving up and down the M1 on my way to the office. She seems to have done a good job of making this a relatively understated creation, but one that still has serious oomph amidst the majesty of Buck Palace.
Here are some pretty cool photos of it, and an accompanying article about the making of the cake and the symbolism of the flowers and architectural details used.
Oh, and we did end up going down to central London for the wedding. My mum, who was visiting, and I caught the earliest train to London and met my sister near The Mall. It was SO worth it:

I do realize that a lot of work, thought and craftsmanship went into that cake, but I don't love it. Maybe if it was broken up by a bit of colour or something...? I don't know, its just not me.
*kisses* HH
Great pictures! I do think its a very elegant cake and very royal, but how great would it have been if she'd gone for a Choccywoccydoodah tower - Id have loved her forever!
I personally LOVE the cake. So elegant and relatively simple.
Love everything about that wedding!
Thanks for the post :)

Surprisingly I really like the cake and I'm not really one for frilly over the top cakes but I have to agree she did a good job of keeping it understated. I really was not a fan of the dress though... but lace is just not my thing. The shape was lovely though.
How much fun that you got to attend! I was watching it live on my computer. I should have kept my eyes peeled for you. :)
Did they ever say how long it took to make? Or how many people? Days and thousands I reckon! Glad you enjoyed the day- I had to work but have literally gorged myself on the highlights, newspaper articles and pictures ever since!
I love the cake! I think it's timeless, well done, and not over-the top. I think keeping the colour to ivory and white was good because it does keep it classic -I mean, what may be in style at the moment might be really tacky in 10 years' time, whereas I think this will still look really good.
I live in Edinburgh, and I spotted some Fiona Cairns cupcakes in Sainsbury the other day! (I hadn't heard of her before the wedding, but that's got to be brilliant marketting!)
Wow! you got a real live picture of the Royals!! I so love it all. Up the Monarchy. so to speak.
This is just what I wanted to see! Been looking for cake photos in all the magazines.
Congrats on 4Food btw. :)
I really like the monochrome colour scheme; I think it looks so elegant. I am so impressed that you and Ele and your mother got to see the balcony kiss! Wow.
By the way, did someone say 4Food?? Do tell more!
wow how close were you great pics bet it was an amazing atmosphere - the cake is beyond fabulous too!
Wow! great pictures! amazing you got that close - looks like you had a great day!
I'm so jealous that you got to see the wedding festivities in action! I was obsessed with all things 'Royal Wedding'.
I'm not one for over-stated cakes, but I don't think this one is too bad. It's large, of course, but the white is very simplistic.
